Big News for the SunFarmer Board of Directors

Building a strong board of directors is a crucial step for a young nonprofit, and we are thrilled to announce our newest member: the Honorable Thomas A. “Tom” Hockin, PC. Mr. Hockin served as Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund representing Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean from 2009 until 2014. He brings to the board a wealth of direct experience and academic knowledge in both the public and private sectors.

Prior to the IMF, Mr. Hockin served extensively in the Canadian government, as Federal Member of Parliament for the riding of London West (1984-1993); Minister of State, Finance (1986-1989); Minister of Small Business & Tourism (1989-1993); and, Minister of International Trade (1993). After leaving politics, Mr. Hockin served as President & CEO of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada and the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning, and chaired the Federal Expert Panel on Securities Regulation.

“Tom’s unique expertise in finance and international development will be a major asset in helping us to achieve our vision,” says Jason Gray, co-founder and Managing Director of SunFarmer. “We are honoured to have him join the board.”

Mr. Hockin earned an Honours, B.A. from the University of Western Ontario, and a M.P.A. and Ph.D., both from Harvard University. He is also a graduate of the Director Education Program of the Institute of Corporate Directors. He has been a Lecturer at Harvard University, as well as a Professor at both the University of Western Ontario and York University and authored over 30 books and articles, including two leading textbooks on Canadian politics.

“Energy access remains a major barrier to economic development around the world,” says Mr. Hockin. “I am pleased to join SunFarmer in tackling the issue. Their model reaches the places that need electricity the most, and with real potential to scale impact.”
